Prion Test – Ensuring Reliable Sterility in Prion Decontamination
A prion is a protein associated with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, known for its resistance to standard sterilisation methods. The Prion Test is specifically designed to confirm the effective sterilisation of instruments by targeting these resilient proteins.
Purpose: When placed inside an individual sterilisation package (pouch, sealed sleeve, or crepe-paper packet) in a fully loaded autoclave, the Prion Test indicates successful sterilisation. A complete colour change at the end of the cycle confirms the total destruction of prions, ensuring the sterility of the enclosed items.
Format: The Prion Test consists of a card strip embedded with prions, intended to be placed directly alongside the instruments being sterilised.
