Ken Finlayson to Trek the Camino
Ken Finlayson Treks the Campino

FMC chairman Ken Finlayson is set to embark upon an ambitious fundraising expedition across northern Spain in memory of his son, James.

Aiming to complete a route known as ‘the Camino’, Ken will be raising money for Dentaid, with funds being used to buy a mobile clinic in his late son’s name.

Speaking to dentistry.co.uk, Ken was keen to explain his motives for completing the trek.

“I tragically lost my son, James, on 28 August 2022. He was only 25.

“To commemorate his life, on the 22 July [2023], I am doing a trek called the Camino. This will entail many mid-summer days of walking over hilly, dusty terrain in searing hot temperatures in his memory.

Translated as ‘the way of St James’, the Campino is an 800 km walk across northern Spain. The trail, which is a popular pilgrimage route, will see Ken end his gruelling journey at the Santiago (St James) de Compostela Cathedral, where he will light a candle in memory of his son.

“James was very, very special to me and my family and to the many people that knew him.”

Ken will be walking in support of the renowned dental charity, Dentaid.

“I am trying to raise as much as possible through this walk to help Dentaid, who do wonderful work, provide more urgent dental treatment to those who need it across the UK.”

Having set himself a fundraising target of £25,000, Ken has already surpassed his initial goal and is now hoping to raise £40,000.

“I am truly amazed at the support that the walk has already had from the dental world and hope many more dentists and dental industry companies will join in too.” Said Ken.

“James was a very special person and I am so proud to be doing this in his memory.”
