Swallow Dental Takes Water Efficiency Pledge
Swallow Dental Takes Water Efficiency Pledge

Here at Swallow Dental, we are proud to announce that we have taken steps to improve our water efficiency.

Working in partnership with Business Stream, we have accepted their challenge to reduce the amount of water we use by up to 20 per cent. This will help us reduce the amount of waste water we produce daily.

Why are we Saving Water?

Water is a precious resource.

Despite covering around 70 per cent of the earth’s surface, only two per cent of water is suitable for drinking. What’s more, less than half of that is actually fresh.

On average, every person in the UK uses 150 litres of water a day, and as the population continues to surge, water demand is only going to increase. Significant lifestyle and behavioural changes are also contributing to a rise in water consumption, meaning the need for safe, clean water is more important now than ever before.

The planet’s ever-changing climate is also a cause for concern. With every passing year, temperatures are becoming more and more extreme, with far less rainfall expected during warmer seasons. Less precipitation could lead to devastating droughts across Europe if we fail to address our water usage now.

By 2040, campaign organisation Waterwise predicts that more than half of our summers will exceed 2003 temperatures when the UK and Europe had one of the hottest heatwaves on record. This will mean more water shortages, with the UK’s water availability reduced by as much as 15 per cent.

In the UK alone, processing, heating and transporting water releases 19.3 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year, which contributes to global warming. By reducing our water consumption, we hope to slash our carbon footprint and help the environment.

Water efficiency challenge from Business Stream

Cutting back on the amount of water we use will also help preserve natural resources, as much of the water we use is taken from lakes and streams. In turn, this will help protect delicate ecosystems and precious wildlife.

Join Our Water Saving Efforts

Simple alterations to daily life can go a long way to helping us all use water more efficiently. Whether that’s running less water from the tap, regularly checking the plumbing or switching to ‘eco mode’ in the shower, every little helps in our collective effort to reduce water waste.

Here at Swallow Dental HQ, we’ll be monitoring our water usage closely as we aim to shave one-fifth off our water usage.

If you would like to join us in helping to save water, here are a few handy tips you can try:

  • Run the tap slowly when washing your hands
  • For extra cold water, fill a bottle or jug and store it in the fridge to avoid running the tap for long periods
  • Use cold water instead of hot when appropriate
  • Have a shower instead of a bath
  • Have shorter showers – aim for less than 4 minutes
  • Ensure washing machines and dishwashers are full before use
  • Install a water-saving device in your toilet’s cistern
  • Ensure taps are turned off fully after use
  • Turn the tap off when brushing your teeth
  • Check your plumbing regularly for drips and leaks
  • Install water butts to collect rainwater – ideal for watering the garden
  • Use eco settings on all of your equipment where possible

We must be aware of the financial and environmental cost of every single drop of water we use.

Striving for Sustainability

Reducing the amount of water we use as a company isn’t the only way in which we’re helping to protect the planet. As part of our sustainability incentive, we’re working hard to reduce emissions across the business as we aim to go greener.

You might have noticed that we already reuse cardboard boxes for some of our larger deliveries, but did you know that our bubble wrap and delivery envelopes are made from recycled plastic?

Every change counts as we help to protect the planet and work towards a better tomorrow.
