How blue®m Works
Harnessing Active Oxygen to Boost Healing and Hygiene

blue®m products are designed to promote oral health through a scientifically developed formula that harnesses the power of active oxygen. Upon contact with the mouth, this unique formula releases active oxygen within just 30 seconds, penetrating approximately 0.5 cm into the surrounding soft tissues to target infection and support healing.
Targets Harmful Anaerobic Bacteria
blue®m’s active oxygen selectively eliminates the harmful microbes responsible for infections, bad breath, and periodontal disease without affecting the healthy bacteria essential for a balanced oral microbiome.
No Risk of Antibiotic Resistance
Unlike traditional antibiotics, blue®m’s non-toxic formula does not lead to bacterial resistance. This means it can be used safely over the long term, without side effects or diminishing effectiveness.
Easy to Use Daily
Each product in the blue®m range is designed for simplicity and convenience, making it easy to incorporate into any daily oral care routine, whether as a mouthwash, oral gel, or toothpaste.
Supports At-Home Healing
blue®m products help patients maintain consistent oral care at home. Their clinically proven active oxygen technology supports healing, prevents infection, and enhances overall oral health between dental visits.

Harnessing Active Oxygen to Boost Healing and Hygiene

Advantages of Active Oxygen
Oxygen plays a vital role in maintaining tissue health, and research has shown that oxygen deficiency is a common factor in nearly all disease processes. In damaged or infected tissues, oxygen saturation levels (pO₂ values) are significantly reduced compared to healthy tissue. When this insufficiency becomes prolonged, the tissue can enter a chronic state, where natural healing becomes virtually impossible.
Recognising the body’s dependence on oxygen, various oxygen therapies are now widely used to support healing and overall health. One of the most effective forms is active oxygen, which offers a range of therapeutic benefits, especially in oral care.
Active oxygen acts as a powerful antibacterial and antimicrobial agent, effectively combating issues such as bad breath, plaque accumulation, and gum disease. By enriching the oral environment with oxygen, it disrupts harmful anaerobic bacteria while preserving beneficial microbes, ensuring a cleaner, healthier mouth without harsh chemicals.
To further support healing and hygiene, blue®m incorporates active oxygen technology using naturally derived ingredients like sodium perborate and glucose oxidase, offering a gentle yet effective solution for everyday oral and wound care.

The Role of Active Oxygen in Wound Healing
Wound healing relies on the increased metabolic activity of various cells, which in turn raises the demand for oxygen. Delivering oxygen directly to the wound site has been shown to accelerate tissue repair by stimulating several key biological functions:
Enhances cellular metabolism and energy production
Promotes cell proliferation and re-epithelialisation
Boosts collagen synthesis and tensile strength
Provides antimicrobial action
Stimulates angiogenesis and revascularisation
Facilitates growth factor signalling
To make active oxygen readily available at the site of injury, blue®m products combine sodium perborate and the enzyme glucose oxidase (GOX). When exposed to moisture, sodium perborate breaks down into sodium borate and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Meanwhile, GOX gradually converts glucose into gluconic acid and additional H₂O₂.
These low, controlled concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (0.003–0.015%) act as a natural disinfectant and contribute to the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), a crucial part of the immune system’s defence mechanism. ROS play a key role in the respiratory burst of neutrophils and help guide white blood cells (leucocytes) to the site of injury, accelerating the healing process.

Oxygen Therapy in Dentistry in Hospital Environment
Hospital dentistry is a growing field that recognizes the importance of oral health in overall health and wellness. Dental surgeons in hospitals work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to provide holistic care to patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, transplantation, prenatal care, and palliative care.
One area that has gained attention in recent years is oxygen therapy, which has been shown to play a critical role in wound healing and tissue repair. Blue®m products, developed by a team of Dutch researchers, use active oxygen (H2O2) to promote tissue repair, wound healing, bacterial plaque control, and bone formation acceleration. By delivering active oxygen directly to the site of treatment in a controlled manner, Blue®m acts as a messenger for repairing cells and eliminating pathogenic bacteria.
While the benefits of oxygen therapy are well established, it is important to note that more is not always better. Excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) and oxidative stress may be harmful to some individuals, and the concentrations of hydrogen peroxide used in Blue®m products are not comparable to the high concentrations used in medicine as a disinfectant.
Conclusion: Hospital dentistry and the use of oxygen therapy in dentistry are important areas of research and practice that aim to provide comprehensive and effective care to patients. By working with a multidisciplinary team and using innovative products like Blue®m, dental surgeons in hospitals can continue to improve patient outcomes and overall quality of life.
